07 Jan Synergy completes SCALE-UP classroom to facilitate active, collaborative learning at local college
Synergy Media Group designed and installed a very unique, high-tech classroom for a local college. The school came to Synergy looking for a SCALE-UP classroom; a collaborative, active learning environment that facilitates interactions between teams of students who work on short, interesting tasks. Years of research has shown significant improvements in learning in these types of spaces. By studying previously installed SCALE-UP’s implemented at MIT, NC State, and Minnesota, Synergy and the college developed a customized audio video system to meet their needs.
Specifically, the room has five circular student tables that each have their own 46″ LED display. Each student table has the ability to display content on their local display as they work in individual groups. Two projection screens are also installed in the space for the facilitator to display additional content. The facilitator is able to move freely around the room and, with an iPad in hand, has the instant ability to display any students laptop on any or all of the other student displays or projection screens. This sharing of ideas and small group learning creates a flow of ideas between groups that was impossible to achieve using standard technology. Additionally, a Vaddio autotrak camera follows the facilitator around the room so that the entire classes video and audio is captured so that it can be distributed to students that miss class or would like to review material. If you’re looking for a collaborative classroom, this is definitely the way to go!
Equipment included in this project include WUXGA projectors, Crestron Digital Media 16×16 switcher, Vaddio AutoTrak Camera, Crestron Capture HD, 15″ Crestron touchpanel, iPad, document camera, custom Altinex pop-up boxes, Crestron DM transmitters and receivers, along with additional peripheral gear.
